Both the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program (delivered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme) and the NSW PDRS battery incentive apply to off-grid and battery-only installs. As of 1 July 2026 the NSW incentive no longer requires existing solar to qualify, which matters a great deal if you're building a battery-first or genuinely off-grid system from scratch. The caveat: the extra NSW top-up for joining a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) needs a live grid connection, so a genuinely off-grid system can't join a VPP and generally can't claim that VPP-linked bonus. The base battery incentive and the federal rebate still apply.
