If you already have solar, you are probably exporting a good share of it for a few cents per kWh, then buying power back in the evening at a much higher rate. Adding a battery lets you store that surplus and use it after sunset. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program applies with existing solar, so you do not need to replace a working system to qualify.

Retrofitting a battery starts with the system you already own. An AC-coupled battery adds its own inverter and leaves your solar inverter in place, which suits newer systems in good condition. A hybrid inverter swap replaces an ageing or incompatible inverter and connects the panels and battery through one unit, which can improve efficiency and backup options. We inspect first, tell you honestly if your existing system has faults or safety issues, and recommend the option that makes sense for its age and condition rather than the one that costs the most.
Existing solar owners who export plenty of daytime solar and want to use more of it in the evening.
Federal discount: the Cheaper Home Batteries Program gives roughly 30% off the installed battery cost, at approximately $272 per kWh for the first 14 kWh and $163 per kWh from 14 to 28 kWh. Existing solar counts, but the battery must be on the approved products list and installed by an SAA-accredited installer. The value steps down every 1 January and 1 July to 2030.
NSW VPP incentive: from 1 July 2026, homes can receive a one-off incentive of up to $1,000 for connecting an existing battery to a Virtual Power Plant.
