Many homes are moving away from gas as they add solar and electric appliances. Hot water is often the first step, because it is a large energy use and an efficient electric system can run on your own solar during the day. Our Gas to Electric Hot-Water Conversion handles the full changeover: removing the gas system, installing efficient electric hot water, usually a heat pump, and adding the new electrical circuit it needs.

Conversions are priced from $2,990 supplied and installed, as an indicative starting price confirmed in writing after we assess your home.

What's included

  • Assessment of your hot water use, existing gas system, switchboard capacity and installation location
  • Recommendation of efficient electric hot water, usually a heat pump sized to your household
  • Disconnection and capping of the gas supply to the hot water system by a licensed gasfitter
  • Removal and disposal of the old gas unit
  • New dedicated electrical circuit installed by our licensed electricians
  • Plumbing connection by a licensed plumber
  • Timer set to heat water during solar hours where you have solar
  • Check of eligibility for government incentives, shown on your quote where eligible

Why Blue Energy Solar

A gas conversion involves three trades: gas, plumbing and electrical. We coordinate them so you deal with one team, the work is completed in the right order and you are not left without hot water for longer than necessary. Because we also install solar and batteries, we set up your new system to make the most of your own solar generation and can advise on the next steps in electrifying your home.

Recommended for

Households moving away from gas, particularly those with rooftop solar or planning to disconnect gas entirely.

Disconnecting the hot water does not close your gas account. If hot water was your last gas appliance, you can ask your gas retailer to close the account and arrange meter removal, which may involve a fee from the retailer or network. If you still cook or heat with gas, the supply to those appliances stays in place.

What affects the price: the switchboard's capacity and condition, cable run length, tank size, installation location and whether plumbing changes are needed. Eligible heat-pump systems may attract government incentives, which we check at quote; confirm current values on the official pages before signing.

Directions

1. Request a quote and tell us about your household, gas appliances and any solar.
2. We assess your gas system, switchboard and installation location, then provide a fixed-price written quote.
3. Once you accept, we schedule the gasfitter, plumber and our licensed electricians.
4. The gas system is disconnected and removed, the new circuit is installed and the new system is connected.
5. We commission the system, set the solar timer and explain the settings.

Warnings

Government incentives depend on eligibility and are not guaranteed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Usually, yes. Gas hot water systems do not need a dedicated electrical circuit, but electric systems, including most heat pumps, do. Our licensed electricians install the circuit from your switchboard. If the switchboard is old, full or lacks modern safety switches, it may need upgrading, which we identify at the assessment and quote separately.

Usually only for part of a day. We coordinate the gasfitter, plumber and electrician so the old system is removed and the new one connected on the same visit where possible. A heat pump then needs several hours to heat a full tank, so we suggest scheduling the work early in the day.

For most homes it is the most efficient electric option. In some situations, such as very limited outdoor space or strict noise constraints, another electric system may suit better, particularly if you have plenty of solar to heat it during the day. We explain the options and running cost differences at the assessment.

Yes, if you also replace your other gas appliances, such as cooktops and heaters. Many households convert in stages, starting with hot water. Efficient reverse-cycle air-conditioning can replace gas heating, and we can plan the steps so your switchboard and solar are ready for the extra electric load.
