Charging an electric vehicle from a standard power point works, but it is slow, typically adding around 10-15 km of range per hour. A dedicated 7 kW wall charger is several times faster and much better suited to daily driving. It typically adds around 35-50 km of range per hour, depending on the vehicle, so most cars are comfortably charged by morning or topped up during the day from solar.

We treat the charger as part of your home energy system, not a standalone gadget. If you have solar, a smart charger can use surplus generation that would otherwise be exported for a few cents per kWh. Where you have or plan a Sigenergy, GoodWe, Fox ESS or Sungrow hybrid system, we consider integrated charging options that share its monitoring; otherwise we choose a quality standalone smart charger. We also check that your switchboard and supply can handle the extra load safely, so the charger does not trip circuits when the oven and air-conditioning are running at the same time.

Vehicle limits: your car's onboard charger sets the maximum AC charging speed. Some vehicles accept less than 7 kW, in which case the charger simply delivers what the car can take.
Cable run: the starting price covers a standard installation reasonably close to the switchboard. Longer runs, trenching or mounting on a pedestal are priced separately.
Supply: older homes may need a switchboard upgrade before a charger can be added safely, and your network's connection rules may also apply to large loads.
Price drivers: distance from the switchboard, wall construction, switchboard space and whether load management is needed.
