Shade is one of the most common reasons solar systems underperform. A tree that barely touches the roof in summer can cast long shadows across the panels in winter, when the sun is low and every hour of production counts. Before cutting anything, or before designing a system around trees, it pays to understand exactly where the shade falls and what can responsibly be done about it.

The assessment starts from $450 per property. This is an indicative starting price; the final price depends on the number and size of trees, the complexity of the site and whether a formal arborist report is required.

What's included

  • A site visit to map trees, buildings and other shade sources around the roof
  • A seasonal shade analysis showing how shading changes from summer to winter
  • An estimate of how shading affects the output of your existing or proposed system
  • Advice from a qualified arborist on tree health and suitable pruning options
  • Guidance on council tree rules and whether a permit is likely to be needed
  • A written summary with design options, such as layout changes or panel-level optimisation

Why Blue Energy Solar

Trees add value to a property, shade homes in summer and are protected in many council areas. We do not start from the assumption that trees must go. Instead, we show what shading really costs in output and compare the options: selective pruning, moving panels to a different roof face, or accepting some loss. Pruning advice comes from a qualified arborist, not guesswork.

Recommended for

Homeowners with trees near the roof, on either side of the fence, who want to know how much shade costs their solar and what can properly be done about it.

NSW councils regulate tree pruning and removal, and trees in bushland, heritage areas or on neighbouring land can have extra rules. Pruning or removing a protected tree without approval can lead to penalties, so approval comes first.

  • This service provides advice; tree work is carried out separately by qualified arborists once any approvals are in place.
  • Trees on a neighbour's property need their agreement and may still need council approval.
  • Regrowth means pruning often needs repeating every few years to keep panels clear.

Never climb trees or cut branches near power lines yourself; tree work near overhead lines needs specialists.

Directions

1. Request the assessment and tell us about the trees and your existing or planned solar.
2. We visit with a qualified arborist to map shade sources and assess the trees.
3. We model seasonal shading and its likely effect on solar output.
4. You receive a written summary with pruning advice, council considerations and design options.
5. If you proceed, we adjust your system design and can help arrange approved tree work.

Warnings

The price shown is an indicative starting price; the final fixed price is confirmed in writing after reviewing the site.
Tree pruning or removal is not included, and any council approval must be in place before work starts.
Formal arborist reports for council applications are quoted separately if required.
Advice on trees on neighbouring land relies on what can be seen and assessed from your property.
Shade estimates are modelled; actual output depends on weather, tree growth and system design.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on how much of the array is shaded, for how long, at what time of year and how the system is wired. Even partial shade on a few panels can pull down the output of a whole string in some designs. The assessment estimates the effect for your roof, so you can judge whether pruning or a design change is worth it.

Council rules vary, and solar access alone is not always enough to gain approval. Minor pruning is allowed without a permit in some areas, while other trees are protected by size, species, location or heritage status. The arborist's advice and our summary set out what is likely to be needed, and a formal arborist report can support an application where required.

You will need your neighbour's agreement before any pruning, and council rules apply regardless of which side of the fence the tree is on. Our summary shows how much the tree affects your solar, which can help that conversation. If pruning is not possible, we look at design options, such as using a less shaded roof face.

They can reduce the impact of partial shade by letting each panel work more independently, so one shaded panel does less harm to the rest. They cannot produce energy from a panel that is fully shaded. We compare the cost and likely benefit of these options against pruning or a revised layout, so you choose the most sensible fix.
