A safety switch, or residual current device (RCD), monitors the current flowing through a circuit and switches off in a fraction of a second if it detects current leaking to earth, for example through a person touching a faulty appliance. Many older Sydney homes have no safety switches, or only one covering the power points, leaving lighting and other circuits unprotected.

Standards for new work. Under the current Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000), new and altered residential circuits generally need 30 mA RCD protection, with limits on how many circuits share one device. Adding solar, a battery or new circuits is often the moment an older board must be brought up to date.
Adding RCDs sometimes reveals existing wiring or appliance faults that cause tripping. We locate these and quote any repair separately. Old boards with ceramic fuses, asbestos backing or no spare space may need a full switchboard upgrade instead. The price depends on the number of circuits, the choice of RCDs or RCBOs, the board's condition and access.
