Pool pumps, hot-water systems, heaters and some irrigation pumps use a lot of energy but are often flexible about when they run. A smart load controller switches them on when your solar system is producing a surplus and off when it isn't, with a backup schedule so they still run long enough on cloudy days. It turns exported solar, worth only a few cents per kWh, into energy used on site.

Our licensed electricians install a correctly rated contactor or smart relay for each load, connect it to a controller that reads your solar or export data, and set the rules with you. Pricing starts from $490 per controlled load, installed. This is an indicative starting price; the final fixed price is confirmed in writing after we assess the load and your switchboard.

What's included

  • Assessment of each load's power rating, start-up current and running needs
  • Supply and installation of a correctly rated contactor or smart relay
  • Connection to a controller or energy monitor that detects surplus solar
  • A backup schedule and minimum run time for each load
  • A manual override so you can run the load at any time
  • Testing, labelling and a compliance certificate
  • App or display set-up and a walk-through of the controls

Why Blue Energy Solar

We start with how you actually use energy. Sometimes one well-chosen load controller does more than an expensive system, and sometimes a diverter, battery or home energy management system is the better fit; we explain the difference honestly. We are a New Energy Tech Approved Seller with $20 million public liability cover, and every connection is made by our licensed electricians using equipment rated for the load.

Recommended for

Solar homes and small businesses with a pool pump, hot-water system, heater or other large load that can run during daylight hours.

Not every appliance should simply have its power switched on and off. Heat pumps, variable-speed pool pumps and some heaters have their own electronics and may need control through a dedicated input rather than cutting their supply, to avoid faults or warranty problems. We check the manufacturer's requirements first.

Motor loads need contactors rated for their start-up current, which is one reason load control is always work for a licensed electrician. The price depends on the number of loads, switchboard space, distance to the equipment and whether you already have monitoring that can drive the controller. Loads on a controlled load tariff may need circuit changes that affect billing.

Directions

1. Request a quote and list the loads you would like to run on solar.
2. We check each appliance's rating and control options and inspect your switchboard.
3. You receive a fixed written quote for each controlled load.
4. Our licensed electricians install the contactors, controller and wiring.
5. We set run times, backup schedules and overrides, then test everything with you.

Warnings

The listed price is an indicative starting price; the final fixed price is confirmed in writing after we assess each load and the switchboard.
Pricing is per controlled load; additional cabling runs or switchboard upgrades are quoted separately.
Some appliances can only be controlled through a manufacturer-approved input.
Changes to a controlled load circuit may affect your electricity tariff.
Savings depend on your solar surplus, usage and tariff and are not assured.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best candidates use plenty of energy and can run at flexible times: pool pumps and chlorinators, electric storage hot water, slab or panel heaters, some irrigation pumps and chargers for tools or equipment. Loads that must run continuously or at fixed times, such as fridges, freezers or security systems, are not suitable. We help you choose the loads that give the best result.

Yes. We set a minimum daily run time so filtration still happens. On sunny days the pump runs on surplus solar, and if it hasn't run long enough by a set time, the backup schedule tops it up from the grid. You can adjust run times seasonally, for example running longer in summer, and override the controller whenever you need.

A timer runs a load at the same time every day, whether it is sunny or not. A smart load controller responds to real solar production, so the load runs when surplus is available and waits when it isn't, while still meeting its minimum run time. On variable days, that usually means more of your solar is used on site.

Yes. Each load has its own contactor or relay, and the controller can prioritise them, for example hot water first, then the pool pump, then a heater. The price is per controlled load, and doing several at once is usually more efficient because the controller, monitoring and visit are shared. We set out each load clearly in your quote.
