Solar thermal or heat pump? Solar thermal collectors are efficient at turning sunlight into heat, but they need north-facing roof space, and a roof-mounted tank adds weight the roof must carry. A heat pump uses electricity, typically a fraction of what a standard electric element needs, and can be timed to run on your own solar.
Frost-prone areas such as the Blue Mountains and Southern Highlands need systems with suitable frost protection.
Booster timing matters: poorly timed boosting can undo much of the saving.
Solar water heaters can be eligible for STCs, which reduce the price at the point of sale; eligibility depends on the product and installation, and values step down over time, so confirm them on the official pages before signing.

Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on your roof space, hot water use and how much solar you export. If panels already cover your best roof area, a heat pump timed to run in the middle of the day is often simpler and uses energy you would otherwise export for a few cents. If you have spare north-facing roof and high hot water use, solar thermal can still be a good choice.
The booster makes up the difference. On sunny days the collectors do most of the heating; on cloudy days and through winter the electric booster tops up the tank to a safe temperature. We set the booster timing so it runs when it is most useful, ideally after the collectors have had a chance to contribute, rather than heating the whole tank overnight.
Yes. Split systems keep the tank at ground level and circulate fluid between the collectors and the tank with a small pump. This avoids extra weight on the roof and suits many tiled roofs and homes where appearance matters. Close-coupled systems with the tank on the roof are simpler, with fewer moving parts. We recommend the layout that suits your roof and site.
A well-installed system commonly lasts 10-15 years or more, with tanks and collectors carrying separate manufacturer warranties that we explain in the quote. Life depends on water quality, frost protection and maintenance, such as periodic checks of valves and the tank anode.
