Many older home solar systems are small by today's standards. Since they were installed, households have added air-conditioning, pool pumps, home offices and electric vehicles, and an early system may now cover only a small share of daytime use. An upgrade lets you add panels to your current system or replace it with a larger, more efficient one, so you use more of your own solar and buy less electricity from the grid.

An upgrade is only worthwhile if the old and new parts work together safely. Panels of different ages and ratings generally should not be mixed on the same string, and older inverters may not meet current grid connection standards or have room for more panels. We check all of this in person before recommending anything. Sometimes the better answer is a new hybrid inverter from GoodWe, Fox ESS, Sungrow or Sigenergy that runs the whole array and is ready for a battery. If your current system is still sound and simply needs more panels, we will tell you that too, and design the addition so it fits neatly with what you already have.

STCs on upgrades: the STC discount can apply only to eligible new capacity, not to panels that already created certificates when they were first installed. Certificate values step down each 1 January and the scheme runs to 2030, so confirm current values on the official pages before signing.
Approvals: increasing your system size needs approval from your local electricity network, which may set an export limit. Some older inverters must be replaced to meet current connection rules.
What affects the price: the number of panels added, whether a new inverter is needed, roof access and pitch, and the condition of the existing wiring and switchboard.
